Avidemux is a free video editor and converter with cutting and filtering capabilities. It can open some of the most used video codecs, such as AVI, OpenDML, MPEG, ASF/WMV2, MPEG-4, 3GP or QuickTime and it can also create a video from a set of BMP, PNG or JPEG images. The output formats supported are AVI, MPEG, OGM and MP4.
This free program offers a wide range of settings and tools, while giving the less-experienced user the opportunity of using built-in conversion profiles for fast and simple video conversions for specific purposes – iPod, PSP, DVD, VCD and SVCD. One of the main functionalities is its cutting tool to save and re-encode portions of any of the supported video files. Together with the formats mentioned earlier, Avidemux supports also less-known video codecs like NuppelVideo or H.263(+).
It includes a useful calculator to customize the size of your output file according to the bit rate applied and the media that will be used to save it. It also offers a Bitrate Histogram, and a series of frame tools to ensure accurate results – a frame rebuilder, a frame checker, and a tool to scan for black frames. It also includes useful tools for subtitling. Both video and audio properties can be personalized, and all of these settings can be saved as filters for future use. It also works with Jobs and Projects, allowing you multiple batch conversion with specific settings for each encoding process.
One of the main assets of this application is its complete Video Filter Manager. Here you can set your own preferences for a long list of functions, such as Transform (crop, resize, add borders, flip, etc.), Interlacing, Colours (hue, contrast, chroma shift, and so on), Noise (cleaners and denoisers), Sharpness, Subtitles (supporting SRT, SUB, ASS, SSA, and VobSub) and many others. You can create any combination of filters, save it, and use it with as many files as you wish, and whenever you need it.
